Devils on Horseback

Devils on Horseback was quite wonderful. The whole experience. Nice parking attendants, friendly guidance, excellent cast, brilliant script, evocative location, talented singer and surprisingly moved. An altogether enriching experience! Audience feedback

We are delighted to have been able to set in motion a collaboration with Dover Tales and The Land Trust to bring this wonderful  Creative Vortex  production of Devils on Horseback to the casements of Fort Burgoyne in Dover on Sunday 13 May 2018. In this centenary year reflecting on WW1 it seems important and appropriate to have had this play come to Fort Burgoyne which was used to imprison concientious objectors in WW1.

Devils on Horseback was a promenade performance which took the audience back to 1917 to relive the secret hearings of men who resisted being drafted into the armed forces in the midst of a conflict that would shape the world. Based on genuine research and written by College Historian and Professor in Media & Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London – Tim Crook brings to life the Brockley postman who said no, the Deptford padre who won a VC saving lives in No Man’s Land, the Labour activist who made the ultimate sacrifice and became Deptford’s first woman Mayor, the press baron who plotted to have the ‘conchies’ shot at dawn and the Mayor who said yes.

There were three timed performances, all of which were well attended and we were pleased to see so many DAD friends as well as new faces. They were warmly welcomed by volunteers from The Land Trust which owns and and manages the Fort. For many in the audience, this was their first visit to Fort Burgoyne,  built in 1860 to defend the North East side of Dover and in particular Dover Castle.

Tom Powell and the staging of Devils on Horseback at Fort Burgoyne has also provided Kristin O’Donnell with a wonderful source for her PhD research into alternative perspectives and memories of the war. Kristin has a collaborative doctoral award with the University of Brighton and Dover Arts Development.

It was really excellent this afternoon. We are really pleased we came to the performance. Acting very good. Gave me food for thought reinforcing some of my thoughts on this matter. Audience Feedback
