Nikita Shergill’s Arles Residency

UCA/AEENSP Exchange

Nikita Shergill had her 10 day residency in Arles in July.

The Arles residency has been a fantastic experience, because it has given me so much more than just ten days in France. I have been opened up to opportunities and possibilities that I would never have had, had I not been apart of this exchange project. The first being my first time travelling on an airplane!

My first visit coincided with the well-known photography festival, les Recontres d’Arles exposition. I met so many new people and really enjoyed seeing new work from the students of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie where I was also showing my work as part of the Work in Progress (WIP) exhibition. There were lots of late nights! With private views, music, screenings and parties, the atmosphere was such a different experience to any other photography festival that I have been to before.

My residency has inspired me to study a masters degree next year in a different country – something I would not have even considered has I not went on this residency.

At first I was overwhelmed by the language and not being able to connect or easily communicate with others but actually this has given me a strong desire to learn a new language and to be able to engage in a new culture. I’ve now actually enrolled onto some French lessons to help start me off.

I am now taking a gap year, after I have just graduated with a BA (Hons) In Photography, currently I’m assisting two artists whilst working with the Editor of Introdex Magazine.”  Nikita Shergill
